There are 6.3 million Pakistanis working abroad, mainly concentrated in Gulf,
Europe and America. They are remitting around 12 billion US$ which is the second
largest source of foreign exchange after exports. Their contribution to the
development of the economy of Pakistan is commendable.
To encourage the OPs to remit their earnings through legitimate channels, a
special package of Foreign Exchange Remittance Card (FERC) has been introduced.
This scheme facilitates those overseas Pakistanis who remit money through normal
banking channels and enjoy incentives: (i) free issuance and renewal of passport
on urgent basis. (II) Separate counters for special handling at arrival and
departure lounges at all international airports in Pakistan.
A joint initiative with Ministry of Finance and State Bank of Pakistan called
Pakistan Remittance Initiative (PRI) has been launched for facilitating OPs in
sending their remittances through banking channels.
Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) an autonomous body under the administrative
control of the Ministry has established schools/ colleges in different parts of
the country where the children of OPs are given special fee concession and
The Ministry, through the office of the CWA and OPF managed location and
repatriation of approximately 5979 displaced Pakistani from Libya during the
recent political unrest in the country and timely provision of information to
their families in Pakistan.
The Election Commission of Pakistan has agreed to grant the right of vote to
overseas Pakistanis. Modalities to implement this decision would be finalized by
Election Commission in consultation with all stakeholders.
