Four years of Democratic Government


Communication

 

The People’s Government is cognizant of the importance of communication sector and as such has allocated sufficient funds for the ongoing projects. The National Highway Authority has completed 46 projects during the last four years at a cost of Rs.78 billion. A sum of 245 billion rupees has been allocated to a similar number of projects having road length of 2985 KM.

   The projects include improvement and extension of Motorways/Expressways and Highways, Gwadar linkages and up-gradation of KKH inclusive of a number of bridges, flyovers and interchanges etc thus creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

     NHA is constructing 12 major river bridges on the directive of Government of Pakistan. These include:

·         Bridge across River Ravi at Sidhnai (M-4)

·         Bridge across River Sutlej (Chistian-Burewala)

·         Bridge across River Jehlum (Nizampur-Victoria)

·         Bridge across River Indus (Jheruk-Mullah Katiar)

·         Bridge across River Indus (Kandhkot-Ghotki)

National Highway Improvement Programme

                     National Highways (N-5) is the major artery, linking the three provinces KPK, Punjab and Sindh catering for the 65% of goods transportation and passengers traffic and 80% overall economic activities. The Improvement programe of National Highways has been undertaken in collaboration with World Bank at a cost of 29.1 billion covering 866.45 KM.

 

                     Floods of 2010 devastated the communication network throughout Pakistan damaging roads, bridges, culverts, retraining walls, causeway etc. 738 KM road and 48 bridges were damaged. NHA carried out restoration work on war footing.

Motorway and Highway Police

                     The Motorway Police covers 2493 KMs of Motorway and Highway and has proved to be an efficient law enforcing agency that is being extended to all federally constructed roads.

                     The Motorway Police besides enforcement is also conducting social service like Polio Vaccination and reunion of lost and stranded children.

                     They are being given basic /in service training in National Highway & Motorway Police College, in modern curriculae of the International Standard.

 

National Training and Research Centre (NTRC)

                     NTRC was set up to optimize the revenue for National Highway Authority Toll Plazas and as a result the revenue has increased to Rs.11 billion. It is also drafting the National Transport Policy and conducting research on cross border traffic at Torkham and Wagha.
